How to get to the Riviera Maya
The main the airport of the Riviera Maya is in Cancun. There is also a Cozumel International Airport. If you are going from the USA, the best deals are offered by Interjet, Volaris, and VivaAerobus. From Europe, you can take Tui, Vamos, Iberia, Eurowings, and Evelope. Once at the airport, you can take the ADO bus to the central station of Cancun or Playa Del Carmen. This is the cheapest way. But if you have a lot of luggage, you can take a shuttle taxi that will take you to your hotel. The cost is around $13 USD. The regular taxis are also available. It’s a good option if you are traveling with friends or family.
Traveling Tips in the Riviera Maya – Transportation
If you are traveling with kids or in a group of friends, it’s better to rent a car. The prices are $50-$70 USD per day. Since not everyone can afford to rent private transport in Mexico, you can use a taxi and public transport. Taxi drivers often charge between$30-$60 pesos. Thus, in Cancun or in Playa, the average ride will cost $65-80 pesos. A different story is with the hotel zone of Cancun and Tulum, and Playacar in Playa del Carmen, the rates are higher.
Traveling between the cities
To move between the cities on the Yucatan Peninsula we recommend to take ADO buses or minivans called colectivos. The buses are convenient for more long distances. They are clean, have A/C and restrooms. Children under 5 years of age can travel free of charge, but no more than one child per adult. Children from 5 to 12 years pay 50% of the total cost of the ticket. Mind that you have to have the child’s ID to prove the age.
The Mexican peso (MXN) is the national currency. Often the peso is indicated on the price tags by the dollar sign $, do not be afraid of that. You can find the exchange spots in most tourist places. In resort areas, you can also pay in dollars, but the rates will be lower. Moreover, you can use USD in supermarkets in Tulum, Playa or Cancun.
Mexican mobile operators
It is very easy to buy a SIM card in Mexico. It is called “chip” in Spanish and is sold in supermarkets and mobile stores. The minimum price for the chip is $150 pesos (around $8 USD). The main operators are AT&T, Telcel, and Movistar.
