Sian Ka’an: UNESCO Heritage Site
Sian Ka’an was established in 1986 to preserve local nature, and in 1987 was included into UNESCO World Heritage List. The name Sian Ka’an comes from the Mayan language and means “where the heavens were born”. It covers part of the municipalities of Tulum and Felipe Carrillo Puerto and the Caribbean shore, including Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. The total area of the protected territory is 528,147 hectares.
How to Get
You can get to the Sian Ka’an from Tulum hotel zone by car (Punta Allen direction). The entrance is through the Mayan Arch. The guards will ask you to sign in at the visitors’ book and pay 50 pesos per person. There is another way to get there from 307 highway through Muyil archeological site. Besides, you can take a tour from any hotel of Riviera Maya.
The natural world of the reserve is incredibly diverse. It includes a wide variety of ecosystems such as islands, lagoons, coastal dunes, and mangroves. Sian Ka’an is home to over 300 species of birds. Moreover, here you can meet jaguars, howling monkeys, tapirs, crocodiles, manatees, turtles, crabs, and other animals.

If you go by car, you may:
- Drive around and observe the animals
- Enjoy deserted beach and snorkel
- Stay still night and watch the crabs’ migration to the sea
