Izamal, the Yellow Town
Also known as the “City of the Mountain”, which has remains of ancient Mayan pyramids. Izamal is a beautiful colonial city with traditional buildings and beautiful old houses painted in yellow and white. Its unique aspect resembles a movie set and gives it a special and unique charm.
Explore the magical Izamal by walking o take a tour in a horse-drawn carriage that takes you all around.
In the center you’ll find “Convento de San Antonio de Padua”, a huge Franciscan monastery, one of the oldest monasteries in America. In addition, Izamal was an important religious center of the Mayans. Furthermore, today you can visit the ruins of four great pyramids that overlook the city center.
Merida, capital of Yucatan
Merida is full of culture and traditions, and the largest city of the Yucatan Peninsula. Also, is a modern, cosmopolitan city, with many art galleries, restaurants, museums, shops, and boutiques.
The Cathedral of San Ildefonso is in the main Plaza is the oldest cathedral on the continent. When visiting Mérida you should try the delicious and famous Yucatecan food in one of the restaurants in the city. It’s worth staying in Merida for a few days, this gives many opportunities to make day trips and visit the surroundings.
In these surroundings we recommend you to visit Celestun or Rio Lagartos and see flamingos in their wildness. Also, nearby you can go to the beach in Progreso or visit Uxmal, an archaeological place. There is a lot to do in this area!
