The Riviera Maya’s new developments are intended not only to provide houses but also to create communities that can blend wilderness, comfort, and sustainability. An exciting new development in Puertas Tulum is bringing the Green School Tulum.

Green School Tulum

Modeled after the Green School in Bali, this new location provides a progressive learning experience that is designed to ignite the natural curiosity of children. “If you are open to the idea that there is a way of living where the environment is as valid as the economy, where your children are schooled with values and standards that the future of the planet needs, then this might be the place for you,” wrote developers on the Puertas Tulum website.

Described as “a school without walls,” the Green School Tulum encourages innovation and creativity. The school describes itself, as “committed to educating for sustainability in a natural environment through our purpose-driven communication.”

Making our World Sustainable

At Green School Tulum, children will experience learning by doing, hearing deep and meaningful discussions, and they will experience daily growth as a whole person. The mission of the Green School is “a community of learners making our world sustainable.”

Green School Tulum also describes their “way” as being, “We educate for sustainability, through community-integrated, entrepreneurial learning, in a wall-less, natural environment. Our holistic, student-guided approach inspires and empowers us to be changemakers.”

The Green School Bali was founded in 2006 after the founders, John and Cynthia Hardy, watched Al Gore’s “Inconvenient Truth,” and felt compelled to take up his call to action. In September 2008, the first Green School opened in Bali, where the founders live, with 90 students. The school has since grown to 400 students, all in a sustainable way. John Hardy shared his vision in a much-viewed 2010 TED Talk, where he speaks passionately about his own troubles as a young student and how the Green School differs from a traditional institute.

Green School Tulum – Teaching Kids to be Ambassadors of the World

The Green School has been widely praised and has had positive feedback from many special and important visitors. These visitors include former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, renowned marine biologist and explorer Sylvia Earle, and famous anthropologist and primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall, who said, “I think all the students here are incredibly lucky because there is this great atmosphere of learning about the things you care about.”

This model has been incredibly successful in Bali and is now spreading to the rest of the world. There are locations due to be opened in New Zealand in 2020, South Africa in 2021, and now soon in Tulum. This new Green School Tulum will follow the same model as the incredibly successful location in Bali.

Each Green School is committed to sustainability and environmentalism. Therefore, it will be exciting to see how this new institution integrates itself into the environment of the Riviera Maya. This new location will also provide an extraordinary opportunity for expats to enroll their children in a future-focused educational institute. Not to mention that at Green School Tulum, kids will learn how to be ambassadors and stewards for our planet.
